In a world dominated by concrete, inner city residences are becoming more isolated from the sea, yet the ocean is a relied upon source that we as a society harness to improve our lives, but are we becoming ignorant to this?
We aimed to create a physical representation of the ocean swell and convey this data in a uniquely beautiful way. ‘Alcove’ gathers sourced data live from the online surf forecast - Magicseaweed. Using a WiFi-connected Arduino, it determines the wave magnitude of a chosen location and mimics its motion within a walnut-framed Perspex tank. This allows those reliant on the sea, for work or for pleasure, to monitor it’s current behaviour at a glance without having to leave their home or rely on screen based data.
